But whatever you think of issues like climate change, sustainability matters.
What’s sustainability? Here’s a good, non-technical definition. Sustainable describes practices a human society can continue indefinitely without causing environmental harm, economic hardship, or social disruption.
We cannot continue to pollute our air, water, and soil. We cannot continue to generate more trash than we have space to discard. Those practices are not sustainable.
On the other hand, we have reached a standard of living that the rest of the world aspires to.
Americans cannot continue to use a disproportionate share of the world’s resources without suffering unwanted consequences from the rest of the world.
Some folks may advocate that we give up the advantages we enjoy, but that won’t happen.
Neither will our society as a whole make great sacrifices for any other hypothetical future crisis. Hardly anyone understands what a carbon footprint is, let alone how to measure it.
But we at Eco Friendly Home Products also know that the vast majority of us want to take care of our environment and live at peace with the rest of the world. We live in the environment. It’s our home, but not ours only.
What we believe
We believe that informed individuals can make better choices for themselves than any government regulation can make for them.
We believe that a sustainable lifestyle will turn out to be less expensive, more healthy, and easier than continuing on our present path.
We believe that sustainable products can be every bit as stylish and practical as other products. As more and more people make sustainable choices, prices will drop. Manufacturers respond to what their customers want to buy. (We pay not only for the products, but how long they remain in inventory!)
We urge everyone to think in terms of life cycle costs instead of initial purchase price. Just as modern light bulbs cost more to buy than incandescent bulbs but use much less electricity, other sustainable products likewise cost less to own and use.
We’re an online shopping mall
Think of Eco Friendly Home Products as a sustainable online shopping mall. Most of our growing list of vendors offer hundreds of thousands of different products. Think of the selection on display here as a shop window. It’s a sample of the variety available inside the store.
Eco Friendly Home Products initially sought vendors of
- Products that generate electricity, either for your whole house, that light in the shed, or just to recharge your cell phone and other gadgets
- Products that help you use less electricity
- Products made with materials and/or manufacturing techniques that have minimal environmental impact
- Products made with significant recycled content
- Products that contain little or no hazardous materials
- Products that help you use less plastic
- Products that help you use less water
- Products that purify the water you drink and bathe in
- Products that help move air efficiently
- Products that remove allergens and pollutants from the air you breathe
Because we are a shopping mall and deal with many vendors, we came to realize that the entire spectrum of “green” products entails other important concerns, including
- Organically grown products
- Cleaning and personal care products without harsh chemicals or potential toxins
- Fair trade and good working conditions for foreign labor
- No cruelty to animals.
So we put those products in the shop window, too. Where else can you find a selection of products that encompasses the entire spectrum of green concerns?
I am a lifelong academic, a music librarian, who got into Internet business with great enthusiasm for research and writing. I have many different interests, so I started a blog called All-Purpose Guru.
I am not a generalist. I don’t pretend knowledge about everything, but I am a multi-specialist. My interest in green living started with the build-up to the first Earth Day in 1970.
I have been looking for ways to be good to the planet ever since. For the last three years of my academic career, I served on two different working groups of the Sustainability Committee. That experience really opened my eyes.
At first, no one, including me, had any idea what All-Purpose Guru was about. Soon enough, I divided it into four separate blogs. The latest few posts of Sustainable Green Homes appear here at Eco Friendly Home Products. Be sure to check out the blog for all the carefully researched information it offers.
I got into what’s called “affiliate marketing” when I learned that it’s nearly impossible to make a living from research and writing. So I follow my interests to help readers keep informed about certain topics that matter to me. I operate this mall, among other ventures, to support the habit.
In other words, this is not a retail site with a blog. It’s a blog with a retail site!
By the way, All-Purpose Guru has become my company name. Follow that link if you want to see what my other topics are!
I cherish your comments and feedback
